Protecting Yourself From Social Engineering
Social engineering is the art of manipulating people so they reveal confidential information. The types of information these criminals seek can vary; but when individuals are targeted, the criminals are usually trying to trick victims into providing passwords, social security numbers, debit or credit card numbers, bank information, or access computers to secretly install malicious software. This can provide access to passwords and bank information as well as allow control over the computer.
Social engineering tactics include:
- Phishing – Attempting to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, or debit/credit card details, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity. Phishing is typically carried out by email or instant messaging and often directs users to click on a link or open an attachment.
- Phone impersonation
- Dumpster diving
- Shoulder surfing
- Social networks
